Milk Carton Emergency Food Kit

Easy to prepare, easy to store, these 72 hour food kits are the easiest way to prepare for emergency situations. This compact, lightweight kit holds just enough food to feed one person adequately for 72 hours. It’s by no means a “comfort kit”, as discussed earlier, but it will certainly be valued if that is all that you have! Keep it in the trunk of your car for evacuations, being stranded, etc.

For the kit, you need:
Two liter pop bottle filled with water (or pre-packaged alternative)
Half gallon milk carton, emptied and cleaned
2 pkgs chewing gum
2 pkgs hot chocolate mix
1 1/2 cups trail mix
2 sticks beef jerky (for our samples, we used one package)
2 pkg apple cider mix
1 small can (or aseptic pack box) of juice
4 granola bars
14 pcs hard candy
2 fruit rolls
3 pkg soda crackers
1 can hearty soup (be sure to get one with a pop top so you don’t need a can opener!)
2 instant soup mix packets
disposable spoon and cup

Packaging this in the carton will take some time and ingenuity, but it will all fit! Staple or tape the carton shut, and then tape the water to the milk carton. Label the outside of the kit with the date so that you can rotate the food every year or so to maintain freshness. Attach this menu to the outside of the carton:
