I won’t be scared if I’m prepared!

Earthquakes, Tsunami, Fires, accidents, floods, Storms, Power Outages...of course, these things only happen to other people, right? No one wants to plan for this type of event, it just doesn’t sound fun. But it’s really scary when it happens. And suddenly, we realize, all too late, that it doesn’t happen to “other people”. It could happen to us.

If we are prepared, we’ll know what to do, how to react, we’ll have resources available to us, and we won’t be scared! Or at least, not so much. And maybe we can help someone else who is scared.

This is especially true for our Hometown Kids. Most children are concerned when they see television reports about floods, hurricanes, and earthquakes. They worry if it will happen to them. It just might! They are remarkably able to adapt, however, and can be calmed by simple preparation. If they know that there is a plan, they don’t have to worry anymore. And Mom and Dad will have a little helper, who knows what to do. One less thing to worry about in an emergency.

Just as importantly, we may be cut off from emergency services in the event of a major disaster. We need to be self-sufficient. Every family can work as a team to sustain themselves until help arrives. Just think of how empowering it is for your children to know how they can help!

Families should plan together. The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Red Cross have developed a brochure to help families in this effort. It’s called “Your Family Disaster Plan”, and can be obtained by contacting either organization. Here are the addresses:
