Hometown Hints for preparing for Emergencies
Our employees have studied up and found
the following things to be very helpful:
Pack everything in your evacuation kit in ziploc bags.
Things can be organized by category, thus making them
easy to find. These bags are clear, so contents are easily seen.
Spills are contained in the plastic, and cannot contaminate
other parts of your pack. And besides, it just makes you look
really organized!
Preparing your kit can be intimidating. Start small!
Today, look around your home to see what you already have
available. Put it into a container, if you have one, and put it
in your car. Each week, when you shop for groceries, buy one
thing to put into your kit. Garbage bags one week, hot chocolate
mix the next. As you buy these items, add them to your kit. This
way, it doesn't break the bank to prepare. And having SOMETHING
is better than having nothing!
Taking a good set of clothes and packing them away for an
emergency is difficult. Buy sweats, etc on sale or on
clearance racks...or at the thrift store! You dont'
have to be fashionable, just comfortable. Buy children's
clothing a size or two large. Then remember to check them
bi-yearly to make sure that they still fit.
You should have approximately $40 in cash and change in your
kit. No one seems to have an extra $40 to save for a rainy ( or
shaky, or flooded) day. M&M Minis come in a great little
container. Buy one, let the kids eat the treats, then set it
aside. When you get quarters for change, drop them in your M&M
container. Before you know it, you'll have more than $10 to fill
the container!! Cash it in for ones or fives and start again.
It's a painless way to save the money. You'll
be surprised at how easily it is accumulated, and no one misses
a quarter here and a quarter there. Just don't raid it before it
is full.
